Evidently I haven't been jotting notes down as I should because I've been getting my weekends mixed up! I totally omitted writing about attending a birthday party for one of Sami's friends. Sami calls her her "best friend" which is absolutely so cute. These little girls hug when they see eachother - it's sweetness overload every time!
The party was fantastic. Breakfast foods because most kids eat breakfast (kudos Julia/Jeremy). The cake was super cute - a round cake to make a troll's face with cupcakes for the ears and the hair. It was really creative and well done. The kids had fun running around and playing together. I was proud of Sami for sharing, which isn't always her strong suit. Sami had a blast running around, going up and down the stairs, and she just had a ball. I tried my best to not hover over her - my best effort yet! ;)
Saturday:
Saturday was pretty uneventful. I did some organizing - tossing things we weren't using, placing like things together and removing it from areas they were cluttering.
I also filled up a photo album (600 photos). I'd purchased pictures from my phone and camera through Shutterfly when there was a really good deal, and sat down as I caught up on General Hospital and just filled it up. It goes from Sami's birth to just after her first birthday.
Now I need to work on ordering the next batch, and another album. I'll be on the lookout for good deals on Shutterfly again!
Sunday:
I cleaned out the fridge including taking out the shelves to wash them. I guess the spring weather is bringing in that feeling of needing to do some spring cleaning. It looks a lot better now.
Exciting weekend right?
Monday-Friday:
On Monday Annual check-up with my gastroenterologist. We decided that we'd check my blood work at my next Remicade treatment (end of the month) and from there decide if we need to adjust my dose or if further tests would be a good idea.
I've been feeling good overall, but if I was to compare how the last 3-4 months have been compared to the last 3-4 years, I'd say the last 3-4 years I've been a 9, and now I'm an 8, or maybe a 7.5 at times. I get pain a little more often. My legs have been itchy lately and seem to coincide with when my treatments are due but it could just be a coincidence because it's been a really dry Winter and Spring. I'm not worried, but I rather catch it on the front end if something is starting up.
The week was pretty uneventful. It was busy at work. I started re-watching an old season of Survivor on Hulu (Pearl Islands season).
As for life with my toddler; we've had excursions to the park, and she's discovered that she can remove and stick gel clings on the patio door. That's been a great source of entertainment, although they are starting to have seen better days and most have gone to the trash due to tears. Potty training continues to go at the same pace - just need her to start telling us when she needs to go. Her vocabulary and sentence structure continues to grow leaps and bounds. She's starting to know numbers by sight. And she's a toddler, so she easily reaches tantrum mode when something doesn't go her way, or doesn't get what she wants.
Still, she's the sweetest in my eyes, and I love her dearly. She's a blast to be around when not in tantrum mode. <3

#MealPlanMonday: May 5-11 & adding healthy snacks
I hope you had a beautiful weekend, we absolutely did with the sunshine and warmth! Here is this week's menu:
Pan-Fried Chicken (recipe from Blue Apron)
Burgers (Hubby's delicious burgers)
Nachos with pineapple salsa (making it sans pineapple bowl)
I managed to do my meal prep this weekend, as planned - fruit/vegetable prep on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. Saturday's prep was more intense because I cut a lot of fruits and veggies.
You see I usually chop raspberries and strawberries every morning for Sami to bring to daycare. Having done it Saturday, I just had to portion it out this morning and will do so the rest of the week. #Win. I then cut up veggies for the salsa, for the quinoa recipe and for snacking.
I've always struggled with eating a lot of vegetables but hopefully being on Remicade will make it so it doesn't cause me a lot of stomach issues. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've attempted this in the past, but have had a few bad experiences.
All month, I'm going to have some cut up veggies with a dip (this week homemade tzaziki) for snacking at work or on the weekend. I also decided I'd make some sort of salad I can snack on, or have as a side with lunch/dinner. This should lead to smaller lunches/dinners - at least that's my theory.
So you'll see that I added a section to my meal plan called "Snack for the week", and that will be my healthy snacking option so that I don't get overly hungry and then eat more than I should for lunch and/or dinner.
And then, I won't feel so guilty for having a chocolate bar here and there, or some chips :)
Added bonus, these healthy eating habits will hopefully rub off on my family and home life. Perhaps Sami won't be eating these types of snacks in the near future, but it will help me reinforce the types of snacks she should have once she's old enough to understand the concept of healthy foods. Here's to hoping anyway.
We'll start with this month though because it's ambitious to think you can make a big lifestyle change Having it on the meal plan is half the battle. I'm more likely to do it than if I was just thinking about doing it.

My5am-9pm: April 21-27 and the best/worse words
Went to swim lessons with Sami – nothing new there. Saturday night, I was feeling rather
nostalgic after seeing that Friday had been the Backstreet Boys’ 25th
anniversary. I went to a couple concerts
in my teenage years and have really always enjoyed most of their music. I watched some of my favorite music videos
for a couple hours. As I recalled how
big they were in my teen years I remembered other videos that had been popular
around the same time. We watched Aqua’s Barbie Girl video, which made me chuckle
quite a bit. We also watched a few Spice
Girls’ videos – while I used to enjoy their music, can I just say how terrible
it now sounds? They do have a few songs
I still like (Viva Forever comes to
mind), but listening and watching some of those videos – wowwee…
Sunday:
We drove by a neighboring area my husband wanted me to see. The homes are beautiful. For the past months, we’ve been debating whether
the best idea is to redo the basement of our current house, or move. I’ll eventually write about my pros and cons,
but if we can find a house on a specific street, on the correct side of the
street, I could definitely be persuaded to move. Right now, I’m 50/50. Some days, I’m all for moving, and others I
don’t even want to consider it.
Monday-Friday:
On Monday, Sami had her first dentist appointment. I was concerned because she kept complaining
about her mouth hurting. She seemed a
little apprehensive when we first got there, but got to playing with some toys
and was happy as can be. We met the hygienist
who noticed Minnie Mouse on her pants and told Sami she might have a Minnie
Mouse toothbrush for her. Sami was all
excited and got to pick from 5 toothbrushes and of course went straight for the
Mickey/Minnie Mouse one. Sami brushed
her teeth with it for the entirety of the appointment when someone else wasn’t
cleaning her teeth.
She did absolutely awesome, and the dentist didn’t notice any
issues, but did point out that her last bottom molars had pierced through. I guess that explains the midnight waking up
sessions lately! I kept checking, but I
guess they pierced through without my noticing.
She was awarded tokens to put in gumball machine for toys, which
she picked bouncy balls (which she all of a sudden calls ballies – odd). We went to make an appointment and she
started saying “I wanna go see…” and would trail off, so I offered “Dada”? She said, “No, I wanna go see the dentiss!”. She melted everyone’s hearts and earned
herself another toy in doing so – a princess duck for her bath. Overall, I would say it was a great
experience!
On Wednesday, it was my turn to
go to the dentist for my bi-annual cleaning.
No issues – yay. All week at work
they celebrated Staff Appreciation which was really nice. We got nice treats like a nacho bar, frozen
yogurt, company swag and a gift card.
Yay Bath & Body Works because I’m in need of cute foaming hand
soaps.
I’ve come to realize that there are two words, regardless of the
language, that can be the best and worst words on earth.
Mama… Dada…
When you first hear your baby say those words to you, it is
heartwarming. If you ask me, it’s one of
the most special memories and feelings once can ever have. And when they are happy to see you, and say
it, it’s sound is sweet to hear.
And then there’s the gut-wrenching “Mama” in the middle of the
night because your child had a nightmare, or woke up because their teeth
hurt. It’s the saddest sound in the
world. Much like when you put your child
down to sleep but they don’t want to sleep and just yell “Mama” or “Dada” over
and over and over and over again. You
want to go see them, but know that you at least have to give them a little
while to try and fall asleep on their own.
I embrace try to embrace the gut-wrenching sounds of hearing “Mama”,
and try to comfort her when appropriate.
While it is painful to hear it’s also rewarding to know that you’re the
one they want to see when nothing seems to be going their way. Still, the best is hearing it when say I pick
her up from daycare and a huge smile comes across her face as she runs toward
me yelling “Mama!”. What a perfect way
to end each (or almost each) workday!

#MealPlanTuesday: April 28 - May 4 & needing more routines
It's #MealPlanTuesday because life happens! ;)
Brown Sugar Pineapple Chicken
Hambuger Helper (Lasagna)
Savory waffles
Frozen leftover casserole
With my new meal planning template, I'm finding myself making more tweaks as I get ready to make my grocery list. It's not a bad thing either because things come up especially when you meal plan a month at a time. For example, two nights this week, my husband won't be home for dinner. That means, less leftovers being eaten, and frankly less time to prepare dinner with my two year old running all around me. "Up, up". "Wanna see it". And as capable I have become at doing everything one handed, sometimes it's not an option with cooking, especially with a hot stove.
Nice weather has started gracing us and I'm starting to want some really fresh and cool meals as opposed to hearty, meaty meals. I made a Caprese Pasta Salad to bring to work as a snack. It felt like a healthy option - perhaps not the best option for losing weight since it does have carbs but it's a step in the right direction. Maybe next week I can make a quinoa salad of some sort and have some sliced veggies and fruits ready to go - and not just for Sami. I slice fruit up for her every morning and I'd be doing myself a service if I sliced everything up on the weekend, but somehow I never get to it.
I blame having a two year old. I guess I blame a lot on having a two year old. I keep hearing that 3 is a turning point. Don't get me wrong, I love my girl, and she's absolutely amazing. She's a sunshine in my every day. But I still feel like I don't have enough time in a day.
All in all, I think it's just about establishing new routines so that it becomes second nature and doesn't feel like it's time consuming. I've basically gained an hour every weekend by picking up my groceries instead of doing all the shopping myself... so where did that hour go? I wish I knew the answer.
Plan for this week - make my meal plan for May while my husband is out since doing it over lunch will be too much of a challenge this week.
Plan out some meal planning strategies for the weekend - possibly:
Do you have routines and strategies that you try to abide to every weekend when it comes to meal prepping?

My 5am-9pm & routine change
Saturday
We had a slight change to our routine on Saturday, Nan came to watch Sami swim! I think she definitely saw progress since the last time she joined us. As new kids join Sami's class, I'm so amazed to see how far she's come when I see little ones doing things for the first time. And she's so much bigger. When did this happen?
Picked-up my groceries again, yay! Received my Blue Apron box, more yays! And we had Chicago dogs for lunch - you can view our creations here (bottom of the page).
Later on we went to the park and then had a somewhat quiet evening.
Sunday
We took a trip to Target on Sunday. I forget what we were going there for, but you can never leave Target without buying anything... or I generally can't. Hubby tagged along this time, and we ended up spending way more than I usually do (makes me feel better about my shopping habits, lol). We bought a PS4 for my hubby whose missing gaming, but doesn't have a whole lot of time to dedicate to it and who is frustrated with World of Warcraft at this point anyway. Legacy servers where are you?
After Sami's nap, we went to visit our friends who have an almost 3 and almost 5 year old. Sami had loads of fun with those boys, and we had a nice time catching up with our friends who we hadn't seen much of since the Superbowl. We had a nice spaghetti dinner and hung out until it was almost time for Sami's bedtime.
Monday-Friday
Early last week, Sami started complaining that her front teeth were hurting. She'd mentioned it maybe once last week too, so I made a dentist appointment which she had just this past Monday. I'll talk more about the appointment next week, but she's fine. Dentist said that sometimes that little flap of skin on top of you gums can easily get irritated and it did look like there was a little bump on it. However, her bottom molars have pierced through and my guess is that's what has been bothering her. She could have been pointing to her front teeth because tooth pain radiates, or she could have just been pointing to her mouth in general.
Monday night and most of Tuesday, we had horrific winds. As I was heading out to lunch, I saw emails from Nextdoor.com which detailed a fire near my house. It wasn't clear where it was so I called my husband to make sure he was ok - which he was. Turns out the fire was about 3 blocks away from our house and the winds were so terrible that the fire jumped to other houses. 2 homes are completely destroyed - we went by this past weekend. Devastating to see. Another 5 homes had damage. As far as I know, they haven't disclosed or found the cause of the fire.
As far as I can remember, I've been terrified of my house catching fire. I had a few recurring nightmares as a child about it. The only thing I can think of that would have caused me to have that nightmare in the first place is this cartoon that would play around Christmas time and there's a scene where someone leaves the iron on the ironing board, plugged in, and someone trips over the cord, or the cat does, and it falls on the ironing board and the whole place catches on fire with the cat stuck inside. I'm assuming the cat is rescued because that'd be a horrible cartoon for kids, but I think that's where my fear stems from. I feel so terrible for these families who have lost everything :(
On Wednesday, I had my Remicade treatment. For the first time in what I feel is 3 years, it really got to me. I was tired and I feel like I just started feeling less tired yesterday.
On Thursday, my husband had a genius idea after I got home from working late. Sami had started falling asleep later like around 8:30, sometimes a little later which meant that I was finishing cleaning up closer to 9:30 than 9:00. Starting last Thursday, I clean up before I start her bedtime routine. Her bedtime routine has been moved back to 7:30 and she doesn't take over an hour to put to bed. And when I'm done with the bedtime routine, I'm done for the night and can relax. :) It's been great and totally worth it!

Stickers, stickers everywhere (that's our bedroom door)
It started with Mickey being in time-out for not listening, and then Minnie and the crab joined him too. This is all her doing, after going to timeout earlier that evening for not listening..
Love this dress. So cute, but her hair looks messy after daycare and sunscreen!

#MealPlanMonday April 21-27 & random thoughts about meal planning
Happy Monday! Another new week, another meal plan.
Crispy Sheet Pan Lemon Parmesan Garlic Chicken
Bowtie pasta
Snow peas & beef stir-fry
Beef burritos (ground beef with Old Del Paso mix + green pepper/onion with fixings of your choice)
I tend to sometimes forget if I need to thaw meat overnight on Friday for Saturday and my four meals this week require me to thaw meat. This happened Friday night, so I improvised and we had spaghetti with meatballs - frozen meatballs and sauce in a jar. Saturday night I remembered to thaw some ground beef so that I could make beef burritos. I knew Sunday would be a busy day having been to a birthday party so it was just perfect. Last night I took out the chicken for the sheet pan dinner tonight. And I just took out the steak to thaw for tomorrow's dinner. I'm on a roll!
Online grocery ordering & pick-up at the store continues to go well. On week 3, I was $10.00 below budget again. Woohoo! I'm rather surprised that the majority of what I'm spending my budget on isn't what's actually needed for each meal. The weekly staples (milk, juice, fruits, yogurt, etc.) tend to bring me to about a quarter of my budget. Then household goods like paper-towels, laundry detergent, diapers, will eat up another good quarter to half of my budget. The rest is lunch fillers, things I need to restock on, etc.
The more I meal plan, the more I'm thrilled that I've introduced this to my life. It's been a great time saver, even if I haven't quite figured out how to consistently meal prep. I need to meal prep the slow cooker meal tomorrow. I thought for sure that I'd have time to meal prep this weekend, but I was feeling tired. It's the first time in a long time that my Remicade treatment made me feel pretty tired - or perhaps you are just exhausted after going to a 2 year old's birthday party trying to keep track of your child who does not sit still. I had some lunch while she napped and was planning on meal prepping but she napped for about 30 minutes... so... yeah.
I'm getting ready to meal plan another month. I should do it next week, but I'm anticipating that I may not have time during my lunch breaks so I may do it one evening this week. I took a short lunch today and will again for a couple days because I have a couple appointments this week. I'm starting to think I need to downsize my recipes again because I keep skipping over recipes I thought looked good. I've certainly found some that I like a lot - and when I do I insert them every month or so.
Have you been meal planning?
Have a great night!!

One of the Blue Apron meals from last week - I split the recipe in two because I didn't want beans in my portion.
The pasta dish was the best. I'd totally make that again.

My 5am-9pm: April 7-13 & Mickey Mouse
I haven't been blogging as much as I would like. It's been another week with a slew of appointments which means short lunches, which means less time to write.
Here's a recap of last week:
Saturday
It's become the norm - we go to the pool and later in the day, we go to the park. On Saturday, I picked up Click List from King Soopers for the first time. I wrote a bit about it last week's recap but really I'm hooked. An hour, at least, of time back to me. Totally worth it the $5 that it will eventually cost me. I think it's also going to solve my issue of overspending because I know how much it's going to cost me prior to my coupons being deducted. And if I'm over budget, something's gotta go!
Sunday
On Sunday we ventured to BabiesRUs. I'm so saddened that they are going out of business alongside ToysRUs. I have so many fond memories of ToysRUs as a child, and BabiesRUs is where I got the majority of what I needed for Preston and Samantha. It was a great one stop shop for babies. The staff was always helpful. So sad :(
I thought we might find a good deal on some items, but the going out of business sales weren't as good as I'd imagined they would be. We then went to the mall and bought Sami some new shoes. And then we took a trip to the park. However, Sami missed a nap this day and was a little cranky.
My Facebook feed last week reminded me that we bought Sami's first Mickey a year ago. It's been one year of Sami loving Mickey. She can't get enough. Like seriously.... There's a character on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse called Martian Mickey. It's basically Mickey but he's green and lives on Mars. Every day, she asks to watch "Martian Mickey, two Mickeys". There's only 3 or 4 episodes with Martian Mickey and let me tell you, we adults are getting a little tired of Martian Mickey... but the joy it brings her...
Monday-Friday
I really need to start jotting down notes during my week. I did it one week and it was so helpful. We played poker on Friday night, and Sami's grandparents came over to watch her so we could go out. I finished 4th, which isn't bad but not great. The cards are certainly not smiling for me this year ;)
I don't have much to add this week. I will go back to the drawing board and start planning my blogs better again. I was doing good for a while...
Have a nice weekend!
Mickey's early days....

#MealPlanMonday: April 14-20 & Contribution
I can't fathom that it's already mid-April. Where is the time going? Down a sinkhole, it just has to be! Am I right??
So far I'm liking my new meal planning template. I don't feel so tied down to trying to get a dish done on a specific day. My template made it easy to make a last minute edit for my meal plane. My husband asked for Chicago Dogs for Saturday when his parents were going to be over. I switched out what I was planning for my "cheap" meal and voila! I was able to get it done before ordering my groceries - even better.
I received my second Blue Apron order on Saturday. I'm super excited to try this again. Hopefully the experience is just as enjoyable as it was the first time. I wrote "N/A" for the cost per serving because I'm still riding the gift card and credits I received. #ThatRideIsAboutToEnd
Meals for this week:
Oregano Chicken & Creamy Mashed Potatoes - Blue Apron
Mexican Beef & Rice Casserole with Tortilla Strips - Blue Apron
Spicy Fusilli Pasta & Broccoli with Mascarpone - Blue Apron
Pizza - homemade for the 19th
Chicago Hot Dogs

I've stated before that I'm a terrible housekeeper. As hard as I try, or think I try - things get cluttered so quickly and it drives me insane. I don't know where to begin to get it straightened out. Doing a good job with the meal planning, prepping, groceries and cooking, makes me feel like I'm offering valuable contributions to the family. I'm not always home so there are many things that I don't get around to doing consistently.
The meal planning and everything involved all the way to the cooking of the meal, gives me purpose. Trying to find ways to make it even better and streamlining the process, and succeeding makes me feel so valuable. And I know that I am valued, but it's also nice to feel valuable without being told. I often feel like I need to be validated, but I'm starting to figure out that I can validate myself. #SayWhat
Long story short, when you are out of the house or basically otherwise occupied for 16 hours out of every day not including sleep, it's hard to find time to contribute and feel valuable. There's only so much time to do chores and it's important to also find some me time. I've heard some pod-casters state that you always have time, you just choose to use it a certain way. To which I respond - sorry when you have very young children, you don't have a choice but to take care of them. And by 9-10pm, you are wiped out - it's not time to declutter your junk drawer. We all need balance so choosing 30 minutes of TV over decluttering when you're brain is fried from a tough day, is not much of a choice, if you ask me. It's a need.
What you do to contribute outside of work, which work is already a huge and valuable contribution - it is valuable. Whether it be the laundry, or dusting once a week/month. Do what you can. Control what you can. The rest, it'll fall into place at some point -like when your kids get older ;)
I noticed this weekend that Sami is starting to have more independent play sessions. She does however often come grab my finger and state "come with me Mama" because she wants me to play with her. And I feel no guilt doing it. I love spending time with her and I cherish those moments.
These independent play session are going to be my opening for de-cluttering. I think my next goal is to build a list of things that need to be de-cluttered and then do them in order. When I get to the bottom of the list, go back to the top and do it all over again until it becomes routine and doesn't feel so unmanageable. You have to start somewhere and right now, I'm a deer in headlights not knowing where to start, so I'm just going to pick something and go! Stay tuned...

My 5am-9pm & seeing the light
Saturday
On Saturday, aside from the usual trip to the pool, we went to the park for an Easter Egg Hunt. I use the work Hunt very loosely because it was basically a field of plastic eggs ready for the grabbing as soon as the organizers said "go". Different sections of the park were for different age groups so that the littles didn't get trampled by older kids.
Sami had a good time and was really excited to show me when she first got one. I had to remind her to put it in her bucket and keep filling it. She filled her bucket in no time.
Since this event occurred basically at naptime, we didn't stay too long for the other festivities but I did take her on a little train that went around the basketball court. She loved it and waived to everyone. She's a little socialite this one.
We walked home, with her in her little umbrella stroller and she fell asleep as we were exiting the parking lot - all the while holding on to her bucket with her dear life. She didn't let one drop the whole way home.
Sunday
Saturday night I had hidden Sami's Easter basket and some Easter Eggs for her to find on the main floor of the house. I hid her basket in her favorite hiding spot which I thought she would go for right away. The Easter basket and eggs must have put a foil into her hide-and-go-seek thoughts because she didn't even look in the pantry until we prompted her.
She found all her eggs and had a jolly good time.
Later that morning, we went to Nan's house, which is my husband's parents house. Nan is the name Brett's mom wanted since that's the name her mother had. His dad is PopPop to Sami. They currently live in the mountains and we have to go up a winding pass to get there. She seemed to have fun as we were zigzagging into the mountains, but when we got to the top - she got sick. It was everywhere and of course that was the day I forgot the wipes on the kitchen counter...
Luckily we were about 15-20 minutes away by then. When we got there, we got all her clothes, and our sweaters and whatever clothes of ours needed to be washed into the washing machine and Sami got into a nice bath that PopPop was already getting ready.
This isn't the first time Sami is sick in the car. It's happened a couple other times, and only after really winding roads... I want to say that means it's motion sickness... but it could also be altitude sickness... I just don't know for sure. I'm leaning toward motion sickness because she wasn't sick when we've been on a plane.
Once the whole cleaning up ordeal was done with, we had fun hunting for Easter baskets, and munching on snacks and then Sami and her cousin went hunting for eggs outside. This time they were actually hidden, unlike at the park.
Monday-Friday
On Monday during dinner, which she was being very fussy about, Sami said one of the funniest things she's said to date. She was just soooo literal! She was under the table as I was trying to get her to take a couple more bites and had let her down since being in the chair was causing all kinds of tantrums. She uttered: "Mama, where's your face?". Hubby and I both thought it was hilarious.. and it's probably mostly because she's our kid. I know she was trying to say something along the lines of look at me but man... that was a good one!
On Thursday, I finally took the advice of several friends. I ordered my groceries online for pick-up. And you know what? It was as fabulous as they raved about. I picked up my groceries this past Saturday and I saved a whole hour if not more of time. Plus, I wasn't tempted to buy things because I was shopping while hungry which inevitably happens every time. Thank you friends for the suggestion, and thank you Kassy for finally getting me to see the light!
Friday was opening day for the Rockies. I've been to one and it's definitely fun and exciting but I don't feel like it's something I want to do every year. And especially not this year because it snowed. The snow starting falling downtown around 10ish and I want to say it stopped just before 2:00 and first pitch was scheduled for 2:10. I'm certainly glad they didn't reschedule because I had several co-workers that attended but I was happy the game was delayed by an hour because that meant that I wouldn't be dealing with the additional traffic come quittin' time ;)
I feel for those who spent a pretty penny to attend such a lousy day to call opening day. The Rockies on top of everything. I just can't imagine being at a baseball game when it's not at least 65 degrees outside. I will watch from the comfort of my living room, thank you very much!
Hope you all enjoyed family time for Easter. Have a great weekend!

Product/Service Review: Blue Apron
I'm finally getting to my review of Blue Apron! Thanks for your patience if you've been curious and waiting for this
It seems that we've been receiving advertisements for Blue Apron and similar meal delivery kit services for years now. I've been intrigued but never looked into it too much because it seemed expensive to me. For Christmas we received a gift card for Blue Apron which got me really excited because I was finally going to be able to give this service a try.
Ordering
Signing up and ordering has been very simple. The website is easy to navigate. While it's a subscription based service, it's easy to skip a week or two or three. Making changes to the meals you want or the type of plan you want is also a simple task.
I opted for the 2-person plan since Sami is in such a picky phase. I may try the family plan in the future to see what type of options they have versus the 2-person meal plan. I opted for 3 meals a week, because it gave me free shipping. It comes out to about $66.00 which is $11.00/portion. I'm aiming to always be under $5.00/portion for my meal plans, so this is definitely pricey to me. But with the gift card - not so pricey! :)
Packaging
Prior to receiving my first delivery, I wondered if it would be an issue if the box stayed on my front porch for a couple hours in case we aren't home when it's delivered. My only other thought was that I'd have to make sure to cook the beef recipe early in the week to ensure it stayed fresh.
The pictures below aren't the best so I will try to paint a picture. The box was pretty heavy and when I opened it, the recipes were on top and there was a thermal bag below it, taking up 90% of the box. I opened the box and all the ingredients were individually packaged and labelled. The meats were vacuum sealed in between 2 sheets of ice. I no longer worried that I'd have to cook the beef that same night!
I kept the ice packages - they'll be great to put in our cooler for picnics! I also kept the thermal bag, you never know when those can come in handy - road trip anyone?
Quality
The produce and meats were of better quality than what I usually get at the grocery store. The meat for the stew was pre-cut as was the chicken which I'll be honest, prepping meat is my least favorite part of cooking. I even prefer cleaning up afterwards and that's saying a lot. I was very pleased!
Everything you need in order to prepare each meal is provided with the exception of olive oil, salt and pepper. All other seasonings and items like soy sauce/glaze and tomato paste are included.
Recipes
One of the things I've struggled with when it comes to Blue Apron is that their recipe options aren't usually meals that speak to me. Either they are something I know my husband and/or I wouldn't eat, or the meals appear to be more geared toward foodies. That was my perception anyway. You have 8 options to pick from and I'll usually see 1 or maybe 2 that seems appetizing, but I don't want to pay for shipping when I can basically get another meal for the price of shipping.
When I found a week that had meals I thought we might go for, I ordered the following:
Beef & Mushroom Stew with Roasted Potatoes
Quick Bucatini with Broccoli & Pecorino Cheese
Pan-Fried Chicken with Zucchini & Pickled Peppers
The recipes were so easy to follow. The instructions are clear, and detailed in step-by-step format. The instructions are accompanied with pictures which is something I personally love. A cookbook with no pictures does not inspire me whatsoever.
With the ingredients being all packaged individually, there was not a lot of meal prep aside - all I had to do what chop the vegetables. No recipe took longer than 45 minutes to make from start to finish which is a bonus for a busy working mama.
Taste
In choosing the recipes, I thought for sure that we would like the recipes in the order they are listed above (stew then pasta then chicken). I was happily surprised that our favorite was the Pan-Fried Chicken dinner because it included some veggies we don't usually eat. Hubby gobbled it up! It's also the meal that was the most fragrant - the house smelled heavenly as soon as the red wine vinegar hit the pan. The rice was just the right touch for the meal.
The stew was my next favorite even if I burnt half the potatoes (oops!). Roasted crispy potatoes on top of the stew was a twist I'd never thought of. And now and I have an easy recipe for roasted potato slices assuming I don't burn them all... ;)
The pasta was my least favorite - I'm just not a big fan of thick pasta - I buy angel hair pasta for spaghetti nights. That being said, it was pretty darn delicious. The sauce tasted like a parma rosa sauce with it's mix of mascarpone and tomato paste. The broccoli made me feel better about eating all those carbs and made me feel good because I sometimes add broccoli to my mac & cheese making it a good choice on my part!
All in all my palate was pleased! And I had fun.
Customer Service
The customer service at Blue Apron has been great. They helped me apply a $30.00 off coupon that I was having trouble applying to my account. They fixed it all for me all through email correspondence and even helped me get an extra $10.00 off when I received a $40.00 off coupon a month later and I hadn't received my first delivery yet. I've since then received a $10.00 gift card from them.
Overall it was a great experience and I'm looking forward to my next delivery (this Saturday!). I don't know that I'll keep doing it once I'm paying full price, but I might try other similar services. Home Chef seems appealing because you have a lot more options to choose from every week and the meals seem more up my alley. If I go for it, I'll be sure to let you know!

#MealPlanMonday: April 7-13 & More on Toddler Eating
I have to admit that we finally had a weekend with no plans and I had plenty of time to meal prep... but I didn't. It would have been so easy too because 2 of the meals require no real prep.
I'll prep the Beef Bourguignon tonight and will probably meal prep the Chicken Francese Tuesday night.
Chicken Francese
Beef Bourguignon
Cat's Mac & Cheese
Jarred spaghetti sauce w/meatballs
You'll notice that my jarred spaghetti sauce with meatballs cost me nothing this week - I already had sauce in a jar, as well as frozen meatballs and I always have angel hair pasta on hand. Pantry dinners can be the best for that reason. I don't get that fun feeling of trying something new, but I save money which is always a plus. My mac & cheese is also low in cost. It'll probably cost a little more next time because I used the last of some of my pantry items to make it; No more tomato juice, and no more Cheez Whiz (I put just a tablespoon or two).
Sami's eating habits still aren't where I wish they were. I put "new" foods on her plate every week and she hardly ever touches them. If she takes a bite of something she doesn't like, or doesn't think she likes, she'll gag. She's even made herself throw up a couple times which makes getting her to try new foods all that much more challenging.
I read something interesting over the weekend. How it might be beneficial to have your children explore new foods rather than stressing about them trying it. If they "explore" they'll eventually taste. So I'm giving that a shot. I made a cucumber salad this weekend, so I placed 1 slice of cucumber on her plate. I didn't pressure her to try it, just left it there. A few minutes into the meal I asked her if anything on her plate was red. I asked if anything was green and she pointed to the cucumber. We asked her how it felt. Next time, I might ask her what it smells like. This food exploration seems worthy of a trial anyway!
I made mac & cheese last night and Sami's had it before, but has also refused it. I showed it to her as I was making it. She seemed interested at first but when it was ready she said she didn't want any. I warmed up some chicken, placed that on her plate with bbq sauce, a slice of cucumber, some raspberries and some mac & cheese. At first she didn't want any, but she asked for help taking a bite and after that she ate the whole portion I had on her plate and even asked for more. Woohoo! There's another one for the win column!
Also, she loved her chocolate Easter bunny.

My 5am-9pm & Potty Training
Saturday
We went to swim lessons but our usual instructor was out. The replacement instructor did most of the things we usually do, although a bit varied. It was a little more casual, but Sami still managed to do all her usual drills.
Sunday
Sunday I went for a massage. My neck has been bothering me for the past month to the point that sometimes it's hard to change lanes on the highway. I figured that meant I needed help. The massage was good. Not relaxing, not that this is why I went. Having a desk job will do a number on your back. I enjoyed the massage because I feel much better now, but yeah - not relaxing ;)
That afternoon my husband and I joined some friends at a bar in Denver for a fantasy baseball draft. My husband has been the commissioner of fantasy baseball and football drafts for many years. I played fantasy baseball for maybe 5-6 years but haven't played in a couple years. My husband stopped being the commissioner for baseball and the league switched to head-to-head which I don't enjoy (versus a points league). However, whenever my husband has been commissioner, we've hosted the draft at our house and I handled updating the draft board online as the draft went along. Our friend asked if I could do the same this year even though we weren't hosting and I wasn't participating.
We had a nice time and everyone seems to have pretty decent teams. Good luck honey! Brizzo FTW!
That being said, I didn't get around to doing meal prep on Sunday because I had too much going on. That made me realize that I need to do groceries earlier on Saturday and not wait until after Sami's nap. My goal is to go right after swim lessons.
Monday-Friday
On Monday night I meal prepped after Sami went to bed. It made for a bit of a late evening, but whatcha gonna do?
Tuesday night, I prepared Sami's Easter basket, filled the eggs for her little Easter Egg hunt in the house and prepared some Easter treat bags and buckets for her classmates and teachers.
Wednesday I had to work late and it felt like an extremely long day because Sami was being difficult at bedtime and didn't want to fall asleep. I eventually put her down and I think she stayed awake for another hour. In retrospect, her throat was probably bothering her because she ended up being sick over Easter weekend.
Friday, Sami had her "spring break". A one day daycare break. I took her to the zoo - lesson learned: on one of the first nice days of Spring, be there before they open so you can find a parking spot. It took me 45 minutes to find a spot (and it's a good 40 minute drive to the zoo in the first place). Sami had fun though. She loved the lions, and the tiger. She liked the bears - brown and polar. She also was excited about the elephants and giraffes. Everything else didn't seem to phase her too much. We'll go again this Spring and Summer. I ended up getting a membership at the zoo for the year. It'll be a good activity for nice days and for getting her out of the house without having to spend too much money.
I've been meaning to write about Potty Training since we started with Sami a couple months ago. We tried a little bit when she moved up classrooms but she wasn't really into it. I started trying to motivate her using stickers and it worked pretty well. We started putting a sticker on the calendar whenever she would go potty before her bath. Some would call it bribing... I call it motivating.
It worked well enough, and they started doing a similar sticker chart at daycare for her. I also created a potty chart which I stuck to a cabinet in the bathroom with columns for asking to go, sitting on the potty and going potty. She really liked it at first but is starting to not be so enchanted by the idea. She knows how to pee the potty but she doesn't always want to. She doesn't often want to.
She graduated to Pull-Ups a couple weeks ago. The Pull-Ups come with either a Minnie Mouse design or a Doc McStuffins design. Sami refused to wear the Doc McStuffins ones for me... What did I do? I had her watch Doc McStuffins and now she even sometimes requests to wear the Doc McStuffins Pull-Ups. #MomOutsmartsToddler #MomWin
Recently though, she wants to choose which Pull-Up to wear and 90% of the time she picks Minnie - big surprise! :)
So, potty training is coming along, but not as quickly as I would have hoped. I know I should probably try the intense 3 day potty training method... maybe one of these days.

#MealPlanMonday: Mar 31-Apr 6
Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a nice Easter. Our little one was under the weather but managed to have some enjoyable activities thanks to Tylenol and Advil.
On this first Monday or April, I am happy to introduce my new meal plan template! It has a column for the meal (which I will continue to plan 4 meals/week), a column for meal themes to help me offer variety within the week, and columns for the number of servings and the cost per serving to help me ensure I'm planning enough for the week and to ensure I'm not planning recipes that cost $10/serving every meal!
Meals for this week:
Raspberry-Chipotle Chicken Breasts with Cucumber Salad
Shepherd's pie
Taco salad and tacos for those who don't like salads (wink wink hubby)
Egg rolls with rice (I buy the Pagoda Express Egg Rolls and Jasmine rice)
Unfortunately I didn't get to do any meal prep this weekend. We had a lot of activities planned the little one needed a little more TLC than usual.
PS. My picture of my meal plan has been updated. I also added the link to the Taco salad recipe. Thanks for your patience.
PSS. Short post this week - I took a short lunch because I had to bring my daughter to daycare this morning. Almost kept her home, but she finally didn't have a fever. And now, I'm coming down with it. It's the last cold of the season right??

Motherhood Through the Eyes of (insert name here)
Months ago I had a realization. I know moms from every walk of life. I know moms who are married, separated, single, divorced, younger, older. I know moms who have lost a baby, lost a child, had miscarriages, adopted and fostered. I know moms who have suffered through illness including cancer, or whose partner suffered through illness, moms who have lost a parent or both. I know moms who work full time, part time, own their own business, are studying and who stay at home. I know moms who have had home births, preemies, c-sections, and gave birth naturally. I know moms who are surrounded by family, and others who live far away from one side of the family, or both. I know moms from different cultures, countries and religions.
I feel blessed because every one of these moms shares experiences or thoughts which helps me through parenthood. Their experiences and thoughts help me grow as a person and as a parent. Through their struggles, I gain more appreciation for what I have, I see different perspectives of how to deal with what life has in store for me and my family. Through their happiness, I smile, I dream about offering similar experiences to my child. All these stories that I read through social media or that I hear about in person - they help me strive to having more balance in my life as a mom. They inspire me to find the best way to help my daughter become her own person.
I feel compelled to repeat myself - I don't think there's one right way to go about everything. Every person is unique, everyone learns and adapts differently. Everyone feels differently about distinctive things. One of the goals for my blog is to offer my perspective because I feel like it's not the same as everyone's out there, and the more perspectives you have, the better you can make decisions. At least, that's what I like to do - read and learn about different ideas and how people do things.
Knowing all these moms - whether it be through work, from my childhood and school years, from where my child goes to daycare, people I've met during the worst time of my life, or connections and friends I've made through the Internet - I feel like I have a unique opportunity to share even more perspectives, assuming they are willing participants of course.
I'm currently working on a questionnaire that I'm hoping to publish on the blog soon. For those interested in sharing their story, you will be able to fill out as much or as little on the questionnaire as you would like and then email it to me. I will then write up a post using your answers, and will have you pre-approve it before publishing it.
I've been racking my brain for a title for this series and I think I finally came up with Through the eyes of. And as you fill out the questionnaire, you'll each decide how you want the title to end:
Motherhood Through the Eyes of Preston and Sami's Mama
or Motherhood Though the Eyes of P and S's Mama
or Motherhood Through Cat's Eyes
Something like that. My goal is to give you as much anonymity as you want while giving you a place to tell your story. Giving you the ability to share or release thoughts you are holding on to. Give you a place to feel helpful if that's something you crave but aren't finding.
Some sample questions:
What do you like best about being a mom? Do you have a different parenting style than that of your partners, and if so, how do you cope with it? If you could change one thing, what would it be? What are some of your favorite things your kids say?
Let me know your thoughts and if you are interested. If you want to remain anonymous and don't want to reply to the post, you can contact me via email: tsunaze1@gmail.com or via Facebook messages on my blog's Facebook page. I've requested the name change, but it's still showing up as Cat's: The Working Mom for now.
Toodles everyone! Wishing you a wonderful day!

My 5am-9pm: Feeling older
Saturday
Saturday was a fun day. We went to Sami's swim lesson. It's an activity I look forward to with Sami every week and I'm 80% sure she enjoys it too. I want to say that we went to the park because it was such a nice day, but I can't be 100% sure. I need to start jotting stuff down from my week - especially for the early parts of the previous week given that I'm now talking about a day that was 1 week and a half ago.
It was St. Patrick's Day which isn't something I've celebrated often. I've never been a big drinker. With Crohn's disease, my digestive system has never done well with alcohol. I can have a drink here and there, but I am always careful of how my body is reacting.
Saturday evening we had some friends over for another game night. It was such a nice evening that we had dinner outside on our deck. Although as soon as the sun started to go down, it got chilly very quickly! Brett made his delicious burgers which we all devoured. Sami even had some burger, sans bun with red and yellow dip - as she refers to ketchup and mustard.
Once Sami was down for the night, we played Settlers of Catan and drank Grasshopper cocktails which my husband had made for St. Patty's Day. I thought it tasted good, but I also don't do great with milk/cream so I only had a few sips and then had my drink of choice - rum & coke.
It was an enjoyable night filled with strategy and laughs. We'd bought Settlers of Catan after playing with our friends in Seattle who we visited on our honeymoon road-trip up the West Coast. It's not a 2 player game so we hadn't played it since. We have a 2 player version which is a version of the game but with cards rather than a board. Different strategies to it than.
Playing this game brought back fun memories for me. The four of us used different strategies although two people had the same strategy which led to both their demise. In the end, our friend Chris won. I'm certain we will play again, and hopefully I'll be more on my game next time! It was fun blocking my husband as he seemed to be close to winning the game. And it's always fun to mess with him :)
Sunday
On Sunday, my husband's parents came over. They had been on a long road-trip in their motor home and had not seen us in several weeks possibly over a month. It was very nice to spend some time with them, and his mom and I took my daughter to the park where the little one coerced her "Nan" to go down the slide after her - several times. We all had a great time.
Monday-Friday
Monday was our 11th year wedding anniversary. Boy that ages me. I received beautiful flowers from my husband and was able to admire them all week at work. It certainly brightened up my cube! They are still going strong on my nightstand. I'd leave them in the kitchen, but my cats would try to eat them... and I recall learning from Friends that lilies can kill cats.
After returning from dinner with Monica's parents, Monica vents to Rachel and Phoebe that her parents spent all the money they had been saving for her wedding:
Monica: "It's not gonna be okay! It sucks! No swing band! No lilies!"
Phoebe: "No, but that's good. You don't want lilies. If a cat ate them, it would die."
Monica: "What?"
Phoebe: "I'm just saying that now you can invite cats."
I cooked three Blue Apron meals which was a lot of fun, but again I don't want to go into too many details since I'm planning to write a review on my blog. Hopefully Friday during Sami's nap :)
My nephew turned 16 last week. As with my wedding anniversary, this ages me terribly! I have always gotten this feeling of amazement and of feeling like I'm getting older whenever my brothers hit milestones. When my oldest brother turned 18, then 21. When my other brother got married and then had kids. When my oldest brother turned 40.
And now my nephew is 16! Above my fireplace I have a big picture frame with 8 pictures or so and one of them is of me holding my nephew the day he was born. It does not feel like it was 16 years ago. He's grown up to me such a nice young man. Well mannered, polite and loves his family. He's over 6 feet tall which is another thing that makes me feel bewildered. For most of his life, I've lived over 1800 miles (almost 3000 km) away which is a sad realization because I missed so much of him growing up. We never know where life will take us. It's a journey that has us take turns, and while my life hasn't been what I always envisioned, I am blessed to have a loving family, a devoted and amazing husband, an angel for a son and a daughter that makes me smile day in and day out.

#MealPlanMonday: March 24-30 & making tweaks
Happy Monday to all :)
If you are a regular reader you know that I tried Blue Apron last week. I plan on writing a review, but I've had a little less free time these past couples weeks so I'm not getting out as many posts as I would like. I will get to it, I promise! Overall it was a good experience.
On the menu this week:
If you are a regular reader you know that I tried Blue Apron last week. I plan on writing a review, but I've had a little less free time these past couples weeks so I'm not getting out as many posts as I would like. I will get to it, I promise! Overall it was a good experience.
On the menu this week:
- Spicy Chicken and Sweet Potato Bowls - 6 servings ~$3.34/serving
- Stuffed Pepper Soup - 8 servings ~$3.00/serving
- Greek Tacos (made with ground beef instead of lamb) - 6 servings ~$2.67/serving
- Sloppy Joe & Macaroni Casserole - 8 servings ~$0.80/serving
You'll notice a few changes with how I'm presenting my menu:
- I've linked up the recipes in case you find them appetizing
- I added how many servings I think or know they will make. If I don't know, I go by what the recipe says.
I've made 3 of these recipes in the past. The chicken bowls recipe states it makes 8 servings, but I know it will make 6 for my family. On the other hand, the Greek Tacos recipes says it will make 4 servings, and it's made 6, if not more, for my family several times. The casserole, if I recall correctly, made a good 8 servings - note to self, make 2 casseroles & freeze one!
I also added an approximate price per serving. This will vary depending on where you live, what you have on hand and what's on sale at the grocery store. For example, I don't usually buy ground beef at the grocery store. My in-laws have raised cattle for the past several years and we've bought 1/4 cow from them. It seems like a high cost when you pay it up front, but it's been well worth it for us. For this reason, the Greek Tacos and Casserole recipes aren't as expensive for me to make as they might be for others who don't have ground beef on hand.
Why have I suddenly decided to add servings and price per serving? I've recently noticed that I'm not saving like I used to at the grocery store. It feels like it's gone up in the last month or so. And I certainly feel like it would be worse if I didn't have a plan. I've been doing this for a while now, and I know that I saved money several months in a row... just not the last month or so.
It's always tough because things like diapers, paper towels, laundry supplies, those all get tacked onto my grocery budget even if they aren't food items. For example, this past week I bought diapers, laundry supplies, mouth wash, hair conditioner, vitamins. That cost alone was over $40.00. Hopefully the diaper expense goes away soon, but in the meantime it's still something that we have to buy every two weeks or so.
I feel like the price of groceries has recently gone up, in general, which means I need to make adjustments to how I'm meal planning because the need for detergent, shampoo, toilet paper and the likes will not go away. And then I have staples I buy every week - bread, milk, bananas, berries (which aren't cheap by any means). The staples run me at about $20.00.
This week is when I'm meal planning for April and I plan to making the following tweaks to my plan:
- Ensure I have a really low cost meal option (example - spaghetti with meatballs and sauce in a jar - I already have a jar and meatballs on hand)
- Ensure that if I choose a recipe that has a lot of ingredients, that I pick two others that have significantly less, or which require pantry items for the most part.
- Pick a recipe that yields 8 servings and cut it in half - either buy half what the recipes calls for, or make 2 batches and freeze one for future use.
- As I make recipes document how many servings we got out of it and document it on the recipe
- As I do my grocery list, document how much the meal costs and document it on the recipe
- Aim for a specific price point to spend on food items only. I'm going to aim for $125.00. Remove my staples and we're down to $105.00 for my meal plan and anything else we need for breakfast, lunch and snacks.
- Allow $25.00 for non-food items and explore purchasing them from other places such as Target, Amazon or Walmart.
Fun times right? I can say with all honestly that meal planning, cooking, grocery shopping and managing everything that revolves around these things makes me feel like I'm making a huge contribution to the family. And whatever way I can find to improve the processes will be beneficial to us all. Cheers to you mama if you are also in charge of these things. It's not as easy as it seems to get dinner on the table, is it?

Balancing Work & Home: My Top Ten Reasons Routines are Helpful
Below you'll find my top ten reasons routines are helpful to me and my family.
1. Sets expectations
I wrote about expectations last week when it comes to meal planning. The routine of meal planning for the whole month has made dinner something I can expect to do every night. I can expect there to be leftovers a couple times a week. Having the meal plan helps me ensure that I keep with it and provide balanced meals for my family, and keeps the motivation active. The routine of doing the dishes and running the dishwasher e-v-e-r-y single night sets the expectation that it's a non-negotiable task that just has to be done before I can kick my feet up. And having that notion in my head, causes my week to be easier. I used to have the thought: OMG I have to the the dishes AGAIN! Does it ever end? every night and it got demoralizing. The short answer is no, it never ends. Having the expectation takes that notion out of my head - it's something that has to be done. By making it a routine and shifting the way I think about it, life is just simplified.
2. Regulates my schedule
Routines create consistency. I think this is even more important for children. I'll use Sami's nighttime routine as an example. While lately she's never happy to hear that it's time to go take a bath, which is the start of the routine, once she hits the bath, it's smooth sailing. It's scheduled. She knows what to expect - ha see what I did there? I usually tell her it's 15 minutes until bathtime, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 2 minutes. I think it helps her prepare and it's less surprising for her than being told out of the blue that it's time to go take a bath. She'll often reply to my 15 minutes to bathtime with and then milk and books and bedtime.
From my experience, if kids go off schedule, they get cranky and difficult. This happens if Sami skips a nap, or has a super late nap, or wakes up in the middle of the night several nights in a row. Routines such as her nighttime one, makes everything simpler. She doesn't mind putting on her pajamas and is actually excited about going to get her milk. She knows that after the stories, she brushes her teeth and then it's time to fall asleep. There's usually a little bit of whining when the last book has been read, but I know that it would be 20 times worse if it wasn't for the routine. I'll take 20 seconds of whines over 20 minutes of it. Any day.
As for me, the routine of waking up at a certain time every morning helps regulate my internal time clock. I'm often able to wake up a little before the alarm. Not that I actually get up though. I will take those 5 extra minutes sir!! The routines I have at work every morning help me have a calm quiet morning before everyone else gets in and things start getting hectic.
3. Things take less willpower
I mentioned earlier that doing the dishes seems to be less of a chore for me, and it's true. I used to dread having to go clean the kitchen. It's still not my favorite thing in the world, but I don't mind it as much. And doing it every day, means I don't have to put as much thought and effort into it. It's not even a thought anymore. I don't walk into the kitchen after putting down Sami for the night and wonder - what to do, what to do? I empty the dishwasher, fill the dishwasher, run the dishwasher, hand wash Sami's dishes and a handful of other items, wipe the counters down and done. Every night. I used to think it was such a chore. It rarely takes me more than 20 minutes.
4. Creates efficiency
Speaking of which... cleaning the kitchen used to sometimes take me over an hour. I had no rhythms. I didn't do one task at a time. I'd put something in the dishwasher, and clean a messy spot on the counter and then put something else in the dishwasher and then I'd go throw a dishtowel in the laundry room. It was sooo inefficient and if there's one thing I can't stand - it's being inefficient. Which is probably why I dreaded cleaning the kitchen.
With a routine, I feel efficient, and therefore I am efficient. I gain confidence and become more proficient and even find ways to improve processes I've previously ameliorated. I save loads of time which is always something I'm looking for. It's the same thing at work. Whenever I can find a routine for a task, efficiency is gained and allows me to tackle on more. Win-win!
5. There's a process in place for someone else if they need to step in
Since routines are so constant, it's easy for people around you to get accustomed to them too, even if they don't do it themselves. For example, if someone else needs to put Sami down for the night, say a sitter or a grandparent, the routine is already there which simplifies the whole process. Less complicated for Sami who might be uncomfortable since I'm not there. Less complicated for the sitter because there's a list of what needs to be done: bath, then lotion, then pjs, then milk, etc.
Another great example is the other week when I had to work late. My meal plan and meal prep, which is now a routine, made it easy for my husband to step in and get dinner ready. He said that having everything all ready to go made it seamless and hardly took any effort.
6. Reduces stress
When I know what to expect, when it's something I do all the time and it's regimented, it's a lot less stressful for me. I keep coming back to meal planning because it's been such a life changer for me - making dinner is usually not something that is a cause of stress anymore. It's not that I would make myself sick over it, but it was something that occupied a lot of my thoughts. It was constant, and it didn't often yield good results.
Having a plan and sticking to it to a certain extent - I don't have to think about it for more than 5 minutes: Which meal am I making today based on when I got home. Or which meal are we going to have tomorrow so that I can plan to get the slow cooker ingredients out for my husband the next morning with a small list of instructions.
7. Stability
It's not that I'm not flexible, or don't like or can't handle change. Routines are a nice constant that I can rely on and creates the feeling that life in general is stable. I deal with deadlines at work every day and the routines built around them helps things run smoothly. I'm not pulling my hair out every 5 minutes and the unplanned tasks are manageable. On the home front, my evenings seem less chaotic with set routines and knowing what to expect of it. It's still non-stop most of the evening, but it's organized chaos ;)
I think stability for children is exponentially important. That feeling of security helps them thrive in their environment. There is so much out of their control which can lead to a lot of frustration - hello tantrums! Stability should, in theory, minimize the feelings of frustration which can get overwhelming when you are learning how to do things for yourself - and want to do them for yourself. For babies, that stability should also help with things like sleeping through the night. I say should because there's always exceptions to the rule. I listened to a podcast the other day and the guest was commenting on how his daughter did not sleep through the night until she was 5. My goodness, that made me feel for them!!
In my mind, more stability for children equates to less power struggles. But then again, I only have a 2 year old so my perspective is probably different than that of parents who have older kids and/or have more than 1 living child.
8. Form habits
While routines and habits are similar and go hand in hand, there is a difference between the two. If we want to get technical, routines encompass completing a series of tasks in a specific order on a regular basis. A habit is doing something regularly and in the same way.
My nighttime routine has helped me create the "doing the dishes" habit. It didn't used to be habit for me, and let's be honest, it should have been. When it wasn't a habit, it seemed like such a chore. Don't get me wrong, I didn't let the dishes pile up until kingdom come, but I didn't do them as regularly as I do today.
Now, it doesn't even feel like a chore. I come down stairs from putting Sami down and I do the dishes as part of my nighttime routine. It's something I do. I don't think twice about it and it gets done and it's over before I know it. I've mentioned it, but running the dishwasher every night is a game changer for me. It means I hardly have anything to hand wash. If I didn't do it every night, I'd be scrubbing a lot more, or would have to run the dishwasher several times in one day when I go to playing catch-up... which I can't really do when I'm not home during the day.
9. Solidifies relationships
Sami's bedtime routine is probably the best example of this. Her bedtime routine usually takes 1 hour between bath time and falling asleep. That is 1 hour of undivided attention that she's getting from her mother. Children crave attention and love. Routines such as this one help build strong bonds between parent and child. I feel closer to her in those moments, and I'm sure she does too.
Similarly, I'm sure a routine of making dinner together could bring a couple closer together, or a nighttime family walk could strengthen family ties. Proximity and completing tasks/activities together are always a plus for relationships of any kind.
10. Priorities are met
I used to feel like I made no progress with my to-do list. I'm certainly not saying that I constantly cross things off my list, but the essentials are always done. Keeping the house somewhat neat. Doing the groceries. Making dinner. Cleaning the kitchen.
Unexpected things happen all the time. We get sick. We have to work late. Unexpected guests, yet welcomed guests, come over. All these things tend to put a wrench in things. Having routines help prioritize what needs to be done. If you skip the dishes one day because you are sick in bed, the next day you know what was missed and you can get right to it and get back on track. Thanks to my meal plan, I can opt for leftovers one night, but I know that I'll have to make the meal I'd planned the following night.
These are my top ten reasons routines make a difference in my life and I'm looking forward to creating more routines as I begin to realize how valuable they really are. Are the reasons routines are helpful to you that I didn't mention? I'd love to hear them! :)
